A modest parking fee is the only expense in visiting.

The main street is lined with tourist shops.

The Abbey. There is a modest admission charge here. After that, you are supposed to follow a tour, but you can pretty much wander at will. The abbey is solely an historic building and is no longer used as a monastery or place of worship.

You can wander freely on the parapets almost encircling the island.

The ramp provided a way to hoist supplies into the abbey. (The base of the ramp is accessible by car or carriage.)

This photo, taken in a town near Mont St. Michel, illustrates the extreme tides in the area, as well as the muddy muck that lines the coast.
